Eyelid consultation

This special consultation focuses on eyelid disorders, particularly congenital eyelid malformations: the team led by Prof. Johannes P. Eisenack, MD, and Prof. Christoph Hintschich, MD, takes all the time to make the correct diagnosis using the latest diagnostic procedures and to determine possible conservative and surgical treatment options together with the parents.
Much can be achieved here, especially in the area of congenital ptosis.

Congenital ptosis - congenital drooping of the eyelid

Congenital ptosis, also known as congenital ptosis, is a drooping eyelid that is often present from birth. It is usually an underdevelopment or malfunction of the muscle that lifts the eyelid (levator palpebrae superioris). This can lead to partial or complete covering of the pupil, which can impair vision and lead to amblyopia.

Causes and symptoms

The causes usually lie in a malformation of the muscle that lifts the eyelid Affected children often have asymmetrical eyelids, and the affected eye may appear smaller due to the drooping eyelid. If the ptosis is very pronounced, it can lead to a noticeable head posture: children try to correct this by lifting their chin. This can cause damage to the neck area and chronic pain.

Treatment options

Early diagnosis is important in order to avoid possible visual impairment. In a detailed consultation, we explain possible conservative and surgical treatment options. The aim is to achieve good visual function, but also, of course, to achieve as inconspicuous an appearance of the eyelid as possible.

If you notice signs of congenital ptosis in your child, do not hesitate to contact us.

Early treatment helps to optimally support the development of vision.
